Red Crossbill are a great example of how special each kind of bird's bill shape is. The unique crossed bill is not a mistake but an important adaptation. Crossbills diet consist mainly of seeds from pine cones and other conifers. They are able to position their bills just so, bite down and get the seeds out of tightly closed cones with ease, Look for them year round in the Rocky Mountains as well as Oregon and Washington.
