House finches are colorful social little birds commonly seen visiting backyard bird feeders. The males are have reddish feathers on the head and shoulders. They are native to the Western US but they were illegally being sold in pet shops in New York City before the 1940s. To avoid prosecution the pet shop owners released them all and they thrived in the wild so now House Finches an be found all across the nation.
