Beautiful kites in the sky are so playful and free! This mixed media painting is my representation of what I imagine it would be like. All the bright colors and movement and glow.
Working on a wood panel offers the possibility of using different techniques that aren't possible on a canvas substrate. I began with collaging vintage book papers in various places on the panel, then layers of paint using a brush, gelli plate and even rubber stamps. if you look closely you will still see book text visible behind the layers. I used a glazing technique to carve out the balloon shapes from the sky and a bit of yellow around each one for the glow. The edges of the piece are finished in white as pictured in the detail photo. The piece is protected with a matte fixative to preserve the rich colors for years to come.
